Dr. Katie Van Sluys, B.Sc, DVM completed a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Alberta in 1995. They then went on to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, where she graduated in the class of 1999. During veterinary school, Katie met her husband, Dr. Jayson Van Sluys (WCVM class 1998), who also works at Fish Creek. Jayson and Katie moved to the United States after graduation, where Katie completed a companion animal internship in New Haven, Connecticut. During the internship, Katie developed a passion for emergency/critical care medicine and emergency surgery, wherein she further developed this interest at a 24-hour referral centre in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Katie and Jayson moved back to Canada in early 2004 and settled in south Calgary. The Van Sluys family consists of two children, a Jack Russell Terrier and some interesting caged pets. Katie currently spends her extra time volunteering with the AbVMA, the local YMCA and in her children's classrooms. The family loves to camp and travel, and when she can, Katie enjoys a good hot yoga class!
